London folks will probably remember the hype that surrounded Mixcloud’s History of Hip Hop event at the Big Chill back in February which saw a selection of key UK DJs play sets incorporating tracks from a specific era of hip hop’s history. I took care of the 80s segment of the event with long time Roots Manuva colaborator and Kiss FM DJ MK handling the 90s and DMC champion and BBC Radio 1 Xtra presenter Blakey dealing with the year 2000 onward. Also appearing on the night were Breaking Bread who put together a set detailing hip hop’s foundations in funk and soul, Disorda who did an excellent history of UK hip hop set and Ninja Tune / BBE’s DJ Vadim who wrapped things up with a mixed bag in celebration of his birthday.
For those of you who didn’t make it down or want to re-live the magic, Mixcloud have put together this nice little video which features footage from the night and interviews with Mixcloud founder Nikil Shah, Disorda, myself, DJ MK and DJ Vadim.
